Independent group wins main seats in PBC – Pakistan


LAHORE: The Independent Group, known as the late Asma Jahangir Group, won majority seats in the 23-member chamber of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) in an election held Thursday for the next five-year term 2020- 25.

Of the 11 seats in the Punjab, the group won nine while the remaining two were won by the professional group led by Hamid Khan.

According to the unofficial result, the successful candidates are Muhammad Ahsan Bhoon, who also heads the independent group, Azam Nazir Tarar, Abid Saqi, Tahir Nasarullah Warraich, Pir Masood Chishti, Hafeezur Rehman Chaudhry, Hassan Raza Pasha, Mirza Aziz Akbar Baig and Syed Kalb -Je-Hassan.

The winners of the Punjab professional group are Chaudhry Ishtiaq A. Khan and Shafqat Mahmood Chohan.

The independent group also claimed to have won four of Sindh’s six seats, three of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s four.

Pakistan Attorney General Khalid Jawed Khan, who led the elections as returning officer, will announce the official results on January 5 in Islamabad.

The respective provincial attorneys general administered the voting process in which members of the provincial bar councils participated.

Obituary: Former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and political figure of the legal fraternity, Mian Israrul Haq, died on Thursday.

A large number of lawyers attended his funeral prayer offered at 10 p.m. in Baghbanpura. He was also a candidate for the PBC election.

Mr. Haq has also been twice elected President of the Lahore High Court Bar Association and a member of the PBC.
