Update: Tue May 10
Welsh Labor have confirmed they are “in talks” with the new mega-independent group and expect them to have the “courage” to form an alliance.
As we reported earlier, the newly merged independent group looks likely to form an alliance with Labor or the Conservatives to secure a working majority to lead Wrexham council.
Today, Labor leader Dana Davies told us: ‘If Independent Councilors have been able to reconcile their differences to push forward a new and ambitious agenda, then that is to be congratulated’
“However, if this is simply a marriage of convenience, designed only to retain power and position and with no other objective, then I fear the public will be rightly disappointed.”
“The test will be whether they want to enter another coalition with outdated Tories, or form a new partnership with Labor based on cleaning up Wrexham’s politics and delivering better services.”
“Change takes courage and we are in discussions with independents to come up with a courageous and ambitious program of change.”
It is understood talks are ongoing today and a decision on the direction the independent group will take could emerge as early as the next 48 hours.
